Summary

Under the direction of the Student Well-Being Lead, the Student Well-Being Worker supports the emotional, social, cultural, and academic well-being of students. This role focuses on early intervention, mental health support, attendance engagement, and strengthening connections between school, home, and community services. The Student Well-Being Worker promotes a safe, culturally responsive, and supportive learning environment where students feel valued, heard, and encouraged to succeed.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Implement the student well-being activities, which include:

Being aware of students’ attendance at school.

Providing group or individual sessions.

Supervising students in class or during online lessons as necessary.

Working with the Social Counsellor to track students' academic progress and share concerns about those who are struggling with the principal, teachers, and student well-being lead.

Providing updates to parents regarding students’ progress at school.

Keeping files and records of individual and group sessions.

Promote learning activities to youth in the community using social media and other youth-friendly media.

Work as part of a team with the community well-being workers, the local Choose Life Program, the Health department, and the Shibogama Education Program to plan, organize, and promote learning activities, including land-based and cultural programming.

Lead and peer mentoring program in the school.

Work with the school and Shibogama teams to develop and implement motivational activities to encourage students to attend classes.

Participate in team meetings for planning activities and to address student concerns as required.

Prepare monthly reports to supervisor on program activities.

Any other duties considered with the position.

Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills

High school diploma coupled with one (1) year of work experience.

Knowledge about the challenges youth have in completing their education.

Experience in organizing youth/children’s activities e.g. recreation, camps, workshops.

Fluency in Oji-Cree.

Good verbal and written communication skills including working effectively with students, staff, faculty, Elders, First Nations communities, parents/guardians, and other applicable organizations.

Demonstrated interpersonal and leadership skills.

Ability to maintain confidential information.

Ability to use computer programs, including emails, Microsoft Suite, etc.

Valid driver’s licence.

Must be able to perform duties with minimal supervision.

Must be willing to travel as required.

Must provide a clean current CPIC and VSS.

A commitment to personal wellness and substance-free living to act as a health role model for youth.
