The Public Health Nurse promotes the health of school-aged children, youth, and the broader community through culturally safe, trauma-informed care. Working collaboratively with Shibogama First Nations and community partners, the PHN delivers immunization programs, communicable disease control, health promotion, and chronic disease prevention initiatives. The role focuses on strengthening community wellness, addressing social determinants of health, and supporting resilience through education, early intervention, and culturally grounded public health practices.

Details

Reporting jointly to the Shibogama Nursing Programs Manager and the Community Health Director, the PHN provides public health programming that includes immunizations, communicable disease surveillance, sexual health education, and mental wellness promotion. The nurse leads infection prevention and control efforts, supports harm reduction and substance use education, and participates in emergency preparedness and response. Strong collaboration with local health teams, schools, and Elders is essential.

Candidates must be a Registered Nurse (RN), Registered Practical Nurse (RPN), or Nurse Practitioner (RN-EC) registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario. Experience in community or public health nursing, especially in First Nations or remote settings is preferred. Applicants should have solid knowledge of immunization, communicable disease control, and harm reduction, along with strong communication and assessment skills. A valid Ontario driver’s license, willingness to travel to northern communities, and current CPR, WHMIS, and Naloxone training are required.
