OFFICE OF THE GRAND CHIEF - LEAVE OF ABSENCE
To: NAN Chiefs and Tribal Councils
From: Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler
Re: Leave of Absence
Date: May 21, 2021
CC: NAN Executive Council & Staff, Affiliated Organizations, Head Electoral Officer
Most of you may be aware that I have made the decision to run for National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations and not seek re-election at NAN. This is to inform you that I am planning to take a leave beginning May 31, 2021 with the return date to NAN, to complete my term as Grand Chief, dependent on the outcome of the national election.
Moving forward, the Grand Chief’s Office will go into caretaker mode, until the new Executive Council takes office in August 2021. This means that there will be no new initiatives, political or administrative decisions made by the current NAN Executive Council. The administrative function of the organization will be managed by the Chief Administrative Officer or designate.
Current NAN Executive Council members seeking re-election will be required to take leave after the nomination period ends and an official candidate list is released by the Head Electoral Officer. This is to ensure there will be no campaign related activities or NAN resources used during regular work hours.
NAN Senior Management will be available to assist Leadership as requested but are not authorized to provide political direction or advice on behalf of NAN.
It has been an honour to serve our communities in these challenging times, and I remain committed to the work ahead in whatever capacity I can be helpful.
