Peace of Mind
Healing Walk September 2002

Payahtakenemowin, meaning “peace of mind” is the network of
the three resource teams in the communities of Kingfisher Lake, Wapekeka, and Wunnumin Lake.

Led by a Resource Team Coordinator, each team consists of a
worker specializing in the following areas:

   • First Nations Mental Health
   • Addictions
   • Family
   • Children

Nurses, constables, and others in related work, serve as “associate” resource team members. The workers join forces to help individuals and families in trouble and to identify long term strategies for community healing. Members of all resource teams participate in a Shibogama wide, college accredited training program, and work together in planning tribal council initiatives.

The main focus of Shibogama’s healing program is to devise coordinated strategies of healing that rely on local strengths and fit the culture and traditions of the people.

Nurses are integral participants in Payahtakenemowin, as they are usually the first on the scene of a mental health or child welfare emergency, and work with medical conditions that are caused or aggravated by personal distress.

Together nurses and local resources work to create exciting healing initiatives for Shibogama First Nations.
